Under the direction and guidance of His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, the Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, the Al Shuwaihiyeen area was selected for restoration, a decision taken with great care. It is one of the most ancient areas in Sharjah, the name of which is mentioned in several historical documents and references dating back to the end of the 18th century. The restoration work of the area, comprising five architecturally acclaimed heritage buildings and a mosque, was done during the period 1993-1995.
Sharjah Art Museum
The Sharjah Art Museum, established in 1995 under the Art Directorate of the Department of Culture & Information, was housed in Bait Al Serkal, Al Shuwaihiyeen area until 1997. The new building of the Sharjah Art Museum was constructed in the area to integrate with the heritage buildings. It was completed and inaugurated on April 9, 1997.
Located in the heart of Sharjah city and fully designated to the fine arts and art-related activities, the museum is displays a permanent collection of art on the ground floor. Since its opening, thirty-three solo and group exhibitions and other related activities have been held at the venue.
Sharjah Art Center
The Sharjah Art Center, housed in Bait Al Serkal was inaugurated on April 9, 1997 (Bait Al Serkal housed the Sharjah Art Museum from 1995 to 1997).
Sharjah Art Galleries
The Sharjah Art Galleries, housed in Obaid Al Shamsi house, consists of a number of art workshops. At present there are 11 artists practicing their work constantly. Lectures, seminars and an art bazaar are conducted regularly.
Emirates Fine Arts Society
This society, a nonprofit organization, established in 1980, is a member of the Arab Art Association and the International Art Association (Arab) in Paris. Head Office of the society is in Sharjah with branches in Abu Dhabi, Ras Al Khaimah and Khorfakkan.
Very Special Arts (House of Abdullah Al Sari)
It was established in Sharjah in 1995 under Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services, a well-known charitable organization to enrich the lives of the disabled, through enlightening and enhancing their artistic skills.
LOCATION
Al Shuwaiheyn, tucked in behind the bazaar, close to Al Boorj Avenue and the waterfront. Public parking is available alongside the Creek (3 minutes walk away) or use the basement parking below the Sharjah Art Museum.
