  • Engineering

It was established and is funded by His Highness, Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, Member of the Supreme Council, Ruler of Sharjah and Supreme President of the University and is governed by a board of trustees.

The American University of Sharjah (AUS) is a nonprofit, independent, co-educational institution of higher education formed on the American model. It was founded in 1997, by His Highness, Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah.

Dr. Sheikh Sultan has articulated the principal values that should define the identity of AUS:

1. Science and education must regain their rightful place in the advancement of our society and in shaping the lives of our children.

2. The purpose of higher education is to reshape the minds of our youth in order for them to address personal and social challenges using the scientific method.

3. AUS must be a center of research for solving the problems faced by society.

4. AUS will have the autonomy and freedom needed to flourish as an independent university.

5. AUS must be organically linked with the economic, cultural and industrial sectors of society in productive cooperation.

Architecturally distinguished facilities will accommodate 4,000 undergraduate students.

The American University of Sharjah and the American University in Washington, DC have signed an agreement establishing a "significant, mutual and cooperative affiliation." American University in Washington is an independent, private university comprised of six colleges. International service, public administration, communication, business, arts and sciences and law.

The enrollment at AU of undergraduate and graduate students is 11,300. Under this comprehensive partnership agreement, AU Washington agreed to provide the senior management personnel for AUS. The contract also calls for AU to certify the equivalency of AUS courses with those same courses as they are offered at AU. This ensures the transferability of credits by students in good standing. The agreement also provides for exchanges of students and faculty both in summer sessions and during the regular academic year.

The American University of Sharjah has also signed an Agreement of Cooperation with Texas A&M University (TAMU) for the development of the College of Engineering at AUS. Texas A&M has agreed to provide the Dean and Associate Dean of Engineering. Under their leadership, AUS engineering programs will be developed to satisfy the accreditation standards of ABET at the earliest possible date. AUS will have access to the educational and technical resources of TAMU as needed.

The College of Engineering at Texas A&M is always ranked among the top twenty engineering schools in the United States. Its program in petroleum engineering is ranked first in the nation. It enrolls over 8,000 students and has a faculty some 300 professors, only in engineering. There are a great many engineering graduates of TAMU practicing their profession throughout the Arab World.

The language of instruction at the American University of Sharjah is English. Bachelor's degrees are offered in 18 majors by the Faculties of four Colleges: Arts and Sciences, Architecture and Design, Business and Management, and Engineering.
