Under the direction and guidance of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the UAE Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, the Al Shuwaiheen area was selected for restoration, a decision taken with great care. It is one of the oldest areas in Sharjah, the name of which is mentioned in several historical documents and references dating back to the end of the 18th century. The restoration work of the area, comprises of five architecturally acclaimed heritage buildings and a mosque, and was carried out during the period 1993 - 1995.
The Sharjah Art Museum and Contemporary Arab Art Museum are located here, in what is commonly known as the Arts Area, with the Sharjah Calligraphy Museum, teaching centre and studios on the other side of Bourj Avenue, in the Heritage Area.
